Benferri: a Rocamora lordship on dry land
Benferri sits where the irrigated Vega Baja begins to meet drier foothill land. Its old centre formed around a Rocamora estate rather than a river crossing, and its municipal history can be followed from a tower and scattered houses to Alfonsine jurisdiction and a parish.
Fifteen houses change the map
Juan Rocamora bought the estate and tower in 1464. By 1494 it remained little more than that tower, but Jaime de Rocamora and his son Jerónimo encouraged colonists to build nearby. Once the settlement reached the fifteen houses required by Alfonsine law, it gained jurisdiction in 1619 and separated from Orihuela in 1622.
San Jerónimo and the lost balsa
The parish church of San Jerónimo dates from the same early seventeenth-century consolidation. Municipal history also records an order to clean the Balsa de Benferri, an earlier reservoir of which no visible remains survive. Naming that absence matters: the lost water store helps explain settlement on dry ground but should not be promoted as a monument a visitor can see.
Dry fields at the edge of the huerta
Almond, olive and former cereal ground distinguish Benferri from the lowest wet plain, although irrigation and modern development have blurred the line. A short visit can read church, street plan and outward view together. Granja de Rocamora continues the family's estates; Orihuela explains the jurisdiction from which both emerged.
The tower before the town
A rural tower could supervise land, storage and movement before enough houses existed for separate jurisdiction. Benferri's sequence from tower to colonist dwellings gives the built centre a clear logic. Later streets gathered around church and estate rather than a river bridge or mountain pass. The original tower is not presented as a complete accessible monument today, so the article uses it to explain settlement form rather than promise a castle visit.
After the seigneurial period
The nineteenth-century end of lordly jurisdictions did not instantly redistribute every property or remove noble influence. Municipal government, tenancy and land transfer changed over time, and the council records a later barony from 1920. That complexity resists a tidy story in which modern freedom begins on one date. Church and parcel pattern preserve older structures while present residents, farms and businesses use them under very different economic and legal conditions.
A landscape at the moisture boundary
Benferri's dry appearance varies by season and by the reach of modern irrigation. Almond blossom, bare cereal ground, citrus and new housing may all appear within a short distance. The lost balsa suggests why storing water mattered, but its absence also warns against reconstructing the landscape too confidently. Public lanes towards Granja and Orihuela provide the clearest comparative views. Heat, traffic and private estate entrances make a planned route safer than wandering between fields.
A practical reading
Benferri's limited monumental fabric makes historical precision especially important. Church, road, estate line and surrounding soils can support a strong account without inventing a visible palace or reservoir. Exterior viewing is often sufficient; services and local events determine church access. A loop towards the dry agricultural margin should use public roads and avoid summer midday, when shade is scarce. Looking back at the compact centre reveals why fifteen established households could alter jurisdiction while leaving the settlement physically dependent on a much larger network of markets and routes.
